The subject of this film is the nomenclature of inorganic chemical compounds. How can chemical compounds be given distinct names? Distinct means that each name may only refer to one specific substance. For example, iron oxide is not a distinct name because it might refer to the red Fe2O3 the black FeO or the jet-black Fe3O4. Conversely, a chemical compound may have several names and many substances have traditional and trivial names in addition to their modern chemical name, often hailing from an era before scientific chemistry.
Elements of course have names. The names of compounds are made up of the names of the elements plus a multiplying affix and a suffix.
Table salt is made up of sodium and chlorine and is called sodium chloride. Aluminum with oxygen is aluminum oxide, and silver with bromine silver bromide.
